IMO 2024 Problem 6: aquaesulian functions
Follow the latest progress by email.
A function f:Q→Q is aquaesulian if, for every rational x,y, either f(x+f(y))=f(x)+y or f(f(x)+y)=x+f(y). Find the smallest integer c bounding the number of distinct values f(r)+f(−r), r∈Q, for every such function.
Why it matters and what counts as progress
Why it matters: The task asks how much global rigidity follows from a functional relation that permits a different branch for each input pair.
What counts as progress: A uniform bound on the number of possible f(r)+f(−r) values, together with a function attaining the smallest bound.
