Transformer wave functions support a gapless spin liquid in a frustrated magnet model

Viteritti, Rende, Parola, Goldt and Becca report numerical evidence for an intermediate gapless spin-liquid phase in the two-dimensional Shastry–Sutherland model, using transformer variational wave functions and extrapolations of order parameters and triplet excitation energies.

Understanding the problem

Read the background

Competing low-energy states make the intermediate phase difficult to characterize. The paper compares with earlier numerical work and adds a direct variational spin-gap analysis.

Why it matters

Substantive evidence about an uncertain quantum phase and its gap, extending neural methods beyond reproducing small exactly solvable examples.

What counts as progress

A sourced analytical result, substantive numerical advance, or useful calculation method with its physical model, approximation, baseline, and AI contribution stated.

What to watch for

  • Compare the same physical model, kinematic region, and approximation.
  • Initial phase evidence was reported in November 2023; this record uses the expanded April 2025 version, which includes the spin-gap analysis. Variational finite-system calculations and extrapolations support a phase interpretation; they do not prove the infinite-system phase or confirm it experimentally in a material. Competing methods and extrapolation assumptions still matter. AIProofWatch has not reproduced the simulations.
  • Track independent checks and subsequent corrections separately from importance.
