OpenAI reports a solution to Howie’s nonsingular-systems conjecture

For any group G and any finite system of m equations in n unknowns, with 1≤m≤n, if the exponent-sum matrix has row rank m over the rationals, then G embeds in the group formed by adjoining the unknowns and imposing the equations. Thus the system has a simultaneous solution in an overgroup.

What was already known

Howie had proved nonsingular-system solvability for locally indicable coefficient groups, and Gerstenhaber–Rothaus for compact connected Lie groups. Hyperlinear groups were also covered. Arbitrary coefficient groups remained open.

AI involvement AI-led

OpenAI credits itself as manuscript author and states that its internal frontier model produced the results in this release. Individual human input is not detailed enough to establish task-only autonomy.

OpenAI is named as author on the manuscript, and its release attributes the results to an internal frontier model. The individual human input is not detailed enough to establish autonomy.

Importance Major

Resolves Howie’s conjecture for every coefficient group and finite nonsingular system.

Limitations

The linked Lean note checks a different, one-relator unimodular coefficient-injectivity result from a companion manuscript; it does not check the several-equation theorem here.

Technical verification Reported

Reported is the default when evidence for a higher level is insufficient. The OpenAI-authored manuscript reports and argues the result, but the reviewed sources do not document a completed check of the full assessed claim.

Human understanding Few

Few is the default when evidence for a higher level is insufficient. No named person is documented as explaining the central argument for this assessed contribution.
